Tour Description

Day 1
Salta | Quebrada del Toro | San Antonio de los Cobres | Santa Rosa de Pastos Grandes | Labyrinth Desert | Tolar Grande
We embark on our journey's first day by venturing into the Quebrada del Toro, situated merely 30 kilometers from Salta city. This natural corridor seamlessly links the lush Lerma Valley with the arid plateau known as Puna. As we traverse the Quebrada, surrounded by archaeological ruins and remnants of the Inca Trail, we make our way to San Antonio de los Cobres, the heart of the Puna, a hub of civilization and a popular tourist destination.
After navigating the Salar de Pocitos, now in its final geological phase, we embark on a three-hour tour through uncharted nature. The Labyrinth Desert, a fossil dune desert aged ten million years, captivates with its array of clay spikes and gypsum crystals. Continuing forward, Tolar Grande perches on the fringe of a massive depression; here, the Salar de Arizaro, among the world's largest salt flats, offers a spectacular view of the western Cordillera with its towering volcanoes piercing the sky at over 6000 meters.
Day 2, Option A
Tolar Grande | Caipe | Rio Grande Salt Flats | Mina Casualidad (Mina Julia).
Mina La Casualidad, once a bustling mining town, is nestled in one of Earth's most isolated and awe-inspiring locales; positioned at the Chilean border, it is enveloped by the planet's tallest volcanoes, amidst sulfurous mountains and salt flats, beneath a cobalt sky, at 4,200 meters elevation.
Decommissioned in the 1970s, it now stands as a ghost town. Caipe, the mine's former railway station, was constructed to transport processed minerals to Salta. From this deserted station, you can enjoy a sweeping panoramic view of the Salar de Arizaro.
As the sun sets, we'll commence our return to Tolar Grande, bathed in the twilight glow.
Day 2, Option B
Tolar Grande | Sea Eyes | Hidden Dunes | Tolar Grande | Caipe
Our morning begins with a visit to the Ojos del Mar, pristine marine-blue pools mirroring the volcanoes' silhouettes at dawn.
The surroundings of Tolar Grande invite exploration through enchanting walks. The most rewarding is amidst the desert's sand dunes. From the dune's summit, a 360-degree panorama unfolds, stretching from the sacred Macón mountain to the Llullaillaco volcano, an ideal spot for meditation.
Following lunch in Tolar Grande, there's time to unwind at the hotel.
In the afternoon, we proceed to Caipe, the historic railway station, integral to transporting mine-processed minerals to Salta. From this abandoned station, a stunning view of the Salar de Arizaro awaits.
At sunset, we'll head back to Tolar Grande, with the day's final light casting its glow over the hills surrounding Tolar Grande.
Day 3
Tolar Grande | Arita Cone | Antofallita Oasis Antofalla | Vega Colorada | Calalaste Gorge | Antofagasta de la Sierra | El Peñón.
Crossing the Arizaro, we trace the footsteps of ancient muleteers from the 18th and 19th centuries, shepherds who guided animal caravans to Chile.
The Arita Cone, a mysterious black volcanic pyramid rising from the white expanse of the Salar de Arizaro, is among the day's highlights. Our journey continues to Antofalla, a striking Puna Oasis. Amidst the high desert, a lush valley thrives, nourished by a natural spring with Poplars, Molles, and Willows.
Day 4
El Peñón | Lagoon Pavilion | Laguna Grande and Diamante | Fumaroles | El Peñón
Today, our adventure takes us to the edge of the Campo de Piedra Pómez. At the Carachi Pampa basin's fringes, discover the Volcano sharing its name, encircled by black lava fields and a lagoon teeming with Andean flamingos and high-altitude James flamingos.
During the dry season, a small salt lake forms surrounding the lagoon.
This peculiar landscape of white labyrinths and towering dunes lies a few kilometers west, along a trail that continues through sand, described as an explorer's dream, an overland odyssey. We'll return to the hotel just in time to savor the mesmerizing sunset from town.
Day 5
El Peñón | Hualfin | Santa Maria | Cafayate | Quebrada de las Conchas | Salta
Today, we journey from El Peñón to Salta city, where the northwest's wonders await. The paved road from El Peñón intersects Route 40 after 150 kilometers from Paja Brava, through a desert canyon with vibrant vegetation at its core.
In the afternoon, under the day's best light, we traverse the Quebrada de las Conchas, a 55-kilometer stretch of breathtaking rock formations, aged 40 million years, featuring key geological formations like Yacoraite or Las Pirguas. Salta, with its verdant Lerma Valley, welcomes you after an unparalleled 4-day adventure through extraordinary landscapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

This premium excursion to the Argentine Puna is typically a full-day trip (approximately 10–12 hours), departing early from Salta or other agreed-upon locations in 4x4 vehicles suitable for high-altitude terrain. The tour prioritizes high-altitude landscapes, salt flats, volcanic ranges, panoramic viewpoints, and Andean villages rich in culture, with stops for photography and short, easy hikes. The exact itinerary may be adjusted based on weather, altitude, and road conditions to maximize safety and enjoyment. Upon booking, you will receive a detailed schedule with pick-up times, main attractions, estimated times, and recommendations for a responsible and sustainable tour of the Puna.

The standard price for this Puna excursion includes 4x4 transportation with a professional driver-guide, a Spanish-speaking guide (and, depending on availability, a bilingual guide), passenger insurance, pick-up from centrally located accommodations, basic hydration, photo stops, and assistance with permits or local taxes where applicable. Depending on the chosen option, a snack or boxed lunch may be included. Typically not included are: additional meals or drinks, tips, personal expenses, altitude sickness medication, pre-/post-tour accommodations, or special equipment. We recommend reviewing the "Includes/Does Not Include" section when booking to confirm any surcharges for out-of-town pick-ups, dietary requirements, or private upgrades.

The Argentine Puna is visited at a high altitude (approximately 3,000–4,500 meters above sea level), so altitude sickness is possible: headache, fatigue, or nausea. For a safe trip, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol and heavy meals the night before, walk slowly, and dress in layers. Consult your doctor if you have heart or respiratory conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are pregnant. The excursion is of low difficulty, but the altitude requires caution. Children, seniors, or travelers with special needs should inform us when booking so we can assess their fitness, child seats, and acclimatization time. The operator prioritizes safety, with gradual breaks and monitoring of everyone's well-being.

The Puna region experiences a wide temperature range, intense sun, and wind. Pack layers of clothing, a thermal jacket and windbreaker, trekking boots, a hat, gloves, category 3/4 UV sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, a reusable water bottle, energy snacks, cash, your ID/passport, a camera, and a power bank. During the dry season (approximately May–October), the sky is usually clear; in summer, afternoon rain or thunderstorms may occur, affecting roads. Due to the altitude, even in summer it is cold in the mornings and evenings. Also pack a personal first-aid kit and, if you use it, any altitude sickness medication recommended by your doctor.

You can book your tour to the Puna region online through the operator's website or via customer service channels (email/WhatsApp), with confirmation via electronic voucher. It's recommended to book in advance, especially during peak season and weekends, to ensure 4x4 availability. Common payment methods include credit card, bank transfer, and local options; please check fees, billing information, and data requirements. Review the cancellation policy before paying: there's usually a free cancellation window and the possibility of rescheduling due to weather conditions or road closures. No-show fees apply. Travel insurance is recommended.
